Ron Dennis has played down Fernando Alonso's surprise comments in the media that he has not been completely comfortable' in the McLaren team since the decision to sign Lewis Hamilton as his team-mate.
Alonso was quoted on the Spanish radio station Cadena Ser saying that from the first moment, I wasn't completely comfortable. I am in an English team, with an English team-mate, who is doing brilliantly'.
Alonso went on to speculate that the team are beginning to favour Hamilton as he establishes a lead in the championship following his maiden win in the Canadian Grand Prix.
We knew all the support and help would go his way. It is something I understand and I'm not complaining."
Something of a reversal from the comments made after the Monaco Grand Prix when it was claimed McLaren were favouring Alonso over Hamilton, Dennis has been forced to insist once again that there is no evidence of inequality in the team.
It's completely understandable that the results of each Grand Prix are going to provide both the British and the Spanish media with an opportunity to hang on every word that the drivers say - and sometimes quotes are taken out of context which can put a completely different spin on an innocent remark, he told the McLaren Mercedes website.
However I can categorically state once again that both drivers have equal equipment, equal support and equal opportunity to win within the team and both Fernando and Lewis know and support this.
Indeed, Dennis also went some way to defend Alonso's comments, insisting they have been taken out of context and that he expects him to still be acclimatising to his new surroundings having spent five years with Renault.
Fernando's comments when read carefully are correct; he hasn't been with the team long and the relationship can only continue to develop. The team is not going to do anything to jeopardise this positive and growing partnership.
