Hockenheim calls for government help
<!--sizec-->
<!--/sizec-->
By Jonathan Noble Monday, December 15th 2008, 15:20 GMT

Hockenheim has called on the German government to step in and provide a bail-out to help secure the future of Formula One at the venue.
The German track is not due to hold its nation's next event until 2010, thanks to a race-sharing deal it has with the Nurburgring.
But with projected six million Euro losses for the race, and the local Baden-Wuerttemberg state saying it will no longer provide financial support, Hockenheim has warned that it may choose to not bring F1 back.
Local government representatives met with interested parties in Stuttgart on Thursday to try and thrash through a deal that would help, with further meetings scheduled for the start of this week. A decision on the race's future will be made in March.
But Karl- Josef Schmidt, CEO of the Hockenheimring GmbH company that runs the circuit, told the German press agency DPA, that the circuit may need help from national government if it was to keep hold of the race.

"The Formula One race is a mega-event, something like a football World Cup. The federal government could do something for it," said Schmidt.

"We have a deadline until the end of March 2009, the financial package has to be in place by then or else there won't be any more Formula One at the Hockenheimring."

Schmidt said he was optimistic that the Stuttgart meetings had provided some good news about the future.

"All those present have a great interest in keeping the race," he said.

PSA interested in Brackley-based outfit?<!--sizec--><!--/sizec-->

A new possible buyer has been named for the Brackley-based F1 team. The French car manufacturer 'PSA', which sells cars under its Peugeot and Citroen brand names, would have expressed interest in buying the team.

The Belgian site autosportnieuws claims that several anonymous sources reported a possible interest now that F1 is looking to drastically reduce running costs.

Despite its campaigns in WRC with Citroen and at Le Mans with Peugeot, there might still be a chance, having in mind that the manufacturer has only been softly hit by the current financial crisis compared to most other car builders.

French carmaker eyes Honda F1 team

Mon 15 Dec, 08:07 AM

The French manufacturer PSA, selling cars under the names Peugeot and Citroen, has reportedly expressed interest in buying Honda's beleaguered Formula One team.

Anonymous sources apparently told the Belgian motor racing magazine Autosportnieuws that the carmaker, last involved in F1 as an engine supplier with the now-defunct Prost team, has made enquiries to buy the Brackley based team as an active F1 competitor.

Citroen's world rally team is the reigning drivers' and constructors' champion, and Peugeot is involved in Le Mans racing.

It is suggested that, given F1's willingness to vastly reduce operating costs, PSA is interested in stepping because it has not been hit as hard by the world economic crisis than some of its peers abroad.

The French government is also pledging financial support to the car sector, in return for Renault and Peugeot-Citroen promising to limit job cuts and plant closures.

It is suggested that Sebastien Bourdais, the French F1 driver whose Toro Rosso seat is in doubt for 2009, would be part of a PSA buyout, with Jenson Button as his team-mate.

Teams invited to field third cars <!--sizec--><!--/sizec-->

Wednesday, 17 December 2008
Dec.17 (GMM) To boost the 2009 formula one grid from its current 18 cars, teams may be invited to field third cars.

That is the information of the Swiss motor racing weekly Motorsport Aktuell, which said Honda's withdrawal has left the sport in breach of its contracts with TV broadcasters.

To get the numbers back up to the minimum 20 competitors, top teams including Ferrari and McLaren could be urged to each voluntarily field a third non-points scoring car.
