Giancarlo Fisichella set the pace on the fourth day of testing this week at Jerez in southern Spain and Renault test driver Heikki Kovalainen was second fastest as the world championship continued to lead pre-season testing. Kimi Raikkonen finished third fastest but had to leave the track at lunch time.
Raikkonen was drivnig the 2006 McLaren with the new Mercedes V8 engine. Test drive Pedro de la Rosa took over at the wheel at lunch time and was fifth fastest - the pair split by the BMW of Nick Heidfeld. However it was not all good news for McLaren as the new V8 engine blew up right at the end of the day.
At the wheel of the new Midland M16 Tiago Monteiro showed the car has some pace in it by finishing eighth fastest ahead of Alex Wurz in the Williams. In the second Williams car Mark Webber was only able to complete 15 laps and finished the day at the bottom of the time sheets with gearbox trouble.
Eslewhere Scott Speed was back out on track and tried the 2006 Scuderia Toro Rosso car finishing tenth after an encouraging 79 laps.
Testing at Jerez concludes tomorrow with a wet tyre test for Michelin.
