Monteiro lining up Midland ride
Rookie of the Year set to return in 2006
Christijan Albers has already been confirmed as one of Midlands race drivers for the 2006 season while Nicky Pastorelli has been announced as the teams third driver. With a seat remaining and Narain Karthikeyan today ruling himself out of the running for the drive and Tiago Monteiro looks set to remain in Formula One next season.
With support from the Portuguese state oil company Galp Energia, Monteiro has reportedly already agreed terms with the squad for next year and an official announcement is imminent.
Should this be confirmed, it effectively sets the grid for the 2006 season as at Squadra Toro Rosso, while the lineup is not confirmed, the two race seats will be taken by Red Bull backed drivers. Over at BMW, Sebastien Bourdais came close to doing a deal to race for the team, but was unable to progress with negotiations due to Jacques Villeneuves seemingly water-tight contract the team inherited from Sauber Petronas. BMW has yet to confirm anything however other than Nick Heidfeld will race for the team, although Heikki Kovalainen's name has now moved into the frame...
Monteiro had an impressive debut season with Jordan Toyota this year, showing the way to his highly rated team-mate Karthikeyan on those occasions that the team were able to challenge for points paying positions. F1 Racing magazine recently voted the Portuguese driver as Rookie of the Year.
