Toyota thrown out of qualifying
Quote:The Toyota team has been excluded from the final results of the qualifying session in Australia following the cars's general post-session inspection in Parc Fermé. Timo Glock and Jarno Trulli have been stripped of their respectible sixth and eighth positions due to the flexibility of the car's rear wing elements, and will join Lewis Hamilton at the back of the grid.
"The Stewards have received a report from the Technical Delegate that the upper wing elements of cars number 9 and 10 are showing extreme flexibility in contravention of Article 3.15 of the 2009 Formula One Technical Regulations" a statement from governing body the FIA read. That specific part of the rules explains that the aerofoils of the car must not have any 'degree of freedom' whilst remaining 'immobile in relation to the sprung part of the car'.
As disqualification results in a stronger penalty that a gearbox change, the two Japanese cars will now start 19th and 20th on the grid, thus promoting Lewis Hamilton's McLaren to 18th. The Toyota downfall is also good new for Toro Rosso's Sébastien Bourdais who, after qualifying 20th, now finds himself three places further up the grid. On top of that, his team-mate - F1 rookie Sébastien Buemi - is now starting on the seventh row, despite not taking part in the second round of qualifying.
