Cumps.

ArrayKovalainen expected to race in Turkey<!--sizec--><!--/sizec-->

By Jonathan Noble and Pablo Elizalde Sunday, April 27th 2008, 16:50 GMT

Heikki Kovalainen's crash after his crash in SpainMcLaren team boss Ron Dennis is confident Heikki Kovalainen will be able to race in the Turkish Grand Prix following his massive crash in Spain on Sunday.

Kovalainen was knocked unconscious after he crashed at an estimated 220km/h on lap 22 of the Barcelona race when he suffered a problem with his left front tyre.

The 100-millisecond accident produced a force of 26G.

The Finn, who waved to the crowd after being extracted from his car, was airlifted to the Hospital General de Catalunya, where checks showed he had no injuries.

"His scans are completely clear. There are no physical damage to him at all and no trauma damage to his brain, he's completely clear," Dennis told reporters after the race.

"(He is) a little concussed. But not as a result of anything other than the trauma of the accident - there's no damage or bruising or bleeding. So we're quite optimistic about the next race.

"I'm not a doctor so I must qualify what I say - I spoke to our doctor at the hospital and we're quite optimistic that at this very early stage he'll be able to race because there is no damage, bruising or bleeding."

Kovalainen will stay under observation tonight and is expected to leave the hospital tomorrow.

Dennis said the team were almost completely sure the accident was triggered by a wheel failure.

"As far as we can tell, because we've now got the parts – a wheel failed," he said. "A very unusual occurrence," he added.

"It had only had 14km on it, so it was a brand new wheel so we have to analyse the components to find out. But at the moment, it's 99.9 per cent certain the wheel failed.

"It's a new wheel and under circumstances like this it will normally be something to do with our partners who make the wheel – but it would be completely inappropriate for me to make any comment until we've analysed the pieces. Obviously, when we know we'll share it with you."

Dennis admitted the team did not consider stopping Kovalainen's teammate Lewis Hamilton because they had already identified the problem.

"We had identified while Lewis was behind the safety car that it was a rapid loss of air pressure. You could see from the imaging that there was no wobble on the wheel so it wasn't a loose wheel and the wheel was still tight afterwards. We felt that it was completely safe to continue."[/quote]

Turun Sanoma Wrote:Heikki Kovalainen lead the race fifth time in his career for only eight turns. In the ninth turn, his left front tire exploded and the car was catapulted straight into the track barrier.

The collision buried the car under the tire barrier and cropped the nose and part of the cockpit. Kovalainen managed to spontaneously bend his knees inside the cockpit, which saved his ankles from damage. He also let go of the steering wheel at the very moment he noticed it does not turn the car.

The stewards were badly frightened when they arrived at the spot and saw Kovalainen's helmet being all over in red. However, the red colour was a transfer from the upper belt of the tire barrier; the purpose of the belt was to press down the barrier against the ground.

Kovalainen had a concussion and hurt his elbow. He was transferred from the track to Sant Cugar del Valles hospital with a helicopter. The head scan indicated that his head was OK. To be sure, Kovalainen stayed in the hospital under supervision for the night; McLaren doctor Aki Hintsa stayed with him over night.

The location of the accident is approached using sixth gear with velocity of 220kmph. The sudden stop was measured to involve 26 g force deceleration.

"Bridgestone are continuing their investigations into the cause of Heikki Kovalainen’s horrific 220km/h crash at Barcelona yesterday, but do not believe the incident was a result of tyre failure.

Heikki Kovalainen was knocked unconscious after his McLaren suffered a problem with the left front tyre and careered into the tyre wall at Turn 9. The Finn has since been cleared from any physical or brain damage and is expected to be fit and well for the next Grand Prix in Istanbul.

Bridgestone Motorsport are investigating the cause of the accident but have so far ruled out tyre failure:

“Regarding Heikki Kovalainen’s incident we do not believe that there was a tyre failure,” the tyre supplier said in a statement after the race. “As is normal we are now conducting a thorough investigation with the team and we are happy Kovalainen appears to have not sustained any visible injuries.”

However, McLaren Team Principal Ron Dennis said after the race that he was “99.9 per cent certain the wheel failed” and that ultimately it was an issue for tyre suppliers Bridgestone rather than McLaren.

“As far as we can tell, because we’ve now got the parts – a wheel failed,” the Englishman said. “A very unusual occurrence. It had only had 14km on it, so it was a brand new wheel so we have to analyse the components to find out. But at the moment, it’s 99.9 per cent certain the wheel failed.”

“It’s a new wheel and under circumstances like this it will normally be something to do with our partners who make the wheel – but it would be completely inappropriate for me to make any comment until we’ve analysed the pieces. Obviously, when we know we’ll share it with you.”

Sinceramente à primeira vista pareceu-me idêntica à do Lewis no Nurburgring, a jante cortou o pneu e ele rebentou.

pessoalmente penso que nao, mas faz carros que as consegue partir, e por arrasto furar os pneus dos seus pilotos.
